Bastien is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow and a molecular biologist by training. For the past 10 years, he has applied his genomics and bioinformatics expertise to ancient DNA datasets in multidisciplinary projects that include the evolutionary history of humans and big mammals, the biological consequences of European colonisation in Indigenous populations from around the world, and the cross-talk between epigenetics and environmental change in animals.

He now aims to build a reference genome for Indigenous Australia and to incorporate worldwide past and present Indigenous genetic variation into a reference human pangenome.

An essential item in Bastien’s toolkit

“Ziplock bags to store bits of skeletal remains of past people and extinct animals, and facemasks and surgical gloves to prevent sample contamination with my own DNA.”
